I think the shared CPU paired with the second most cheapest VPS was messing with Ejabberd. I upgraded my VPS to premium Intel with double the ram (2 GB lol). I also got 2 vCPUS instead of 1 now.
To be clear, this new VPS is also shared CPU but I think not every gooner that comes onto Digital Ocean jumps right onto the premium Intel VPS. That's why this shared CPU is a bit more capable of handling loads. But that's just a theory.
