In my experience, some public wifis (British trains, maybe some airports and hotels, too) block most ports. It makes sense to replace 5223 with 443, if possible. I typically do that with ALPN to separate HTTP and XMPP, but as I noted recently, some clients don't work well with ALPN, i.e. I had problems with Movim.
